The Nietzschean Dog — $RUSS

At Tribschen, Nietzsche often walked beside Richard Wagner while Russ, Wagner's large black Newfoundland, followed quietly behind. The philosophers spoke of tragedy, suffering, and the future of culture, while Russ seemed indifferent to their grand ideas. He lived by instinct — stopping when tired, running when joyful, sensing sadness before anyone explained it.

Nietzsche began to notice that the dog understood pain differently from men. Russ did not ask why suffering existed; he carried it, adapted to it, and continued forward. When the Wagner household prepared to leave Tribschen, Russ stopped eating. To Nietzsche, the dog's silent grief seemed more honest than any speech.

Years later, struggling with illness, Nietzsche imagined his own pain as a dog — faithful, irritating, always at his side. Perhaps he remembered Russ. Instead of trying to destroy suffering, he gave it a name, spoke to it, and learned to walk beside it.

Russ had shown him.
